The young men told relatives that they were talking in a mixture of English and Arabic before the gunman shot them, according to a family spokeswoman. Relatives said they feared that the young men were targeted for being Arab Americans. The suspect answered the door, “stepped toward them with his palms up,” Mr. Murad said, and told the agents, “I’ve been waiting for you.”When the agents asked him why, Mr. Eaton requested a lawyer. A public defender assigned as co-counsel for Mr. Eaton, Margaret Jansch, declined to comment on the details of the case. “These three young men are incredible,” he said, “and they are committed to building incredible lives.”Anna Betts contributed reporting from New York, and Siobhan Neela-Stock from Salisbury, Vt. The manhunt for a convicted murderer who left a South Carolina prison under puzzling circumstances pressed on for more than two months with few developments. The reward for his capture kept growing, climbing to $60,000, as the authorities made repeated pleas for help. Finally, in recent days, investigators received a promising tip: Their fugitive, Jeriod Price, was in New York. “Jeriod Price is no longer a wanted man,” Alan Wilson, the South Carolina attorney general, announced at a news conference. He was released in March under a secret order signed by a prominent judge who retired the next day.

The special prosecutor, Lawrence Middleton, had secured convictions in a 1993 federal trial against Los Angeles Police Department officers for beating Rodney King. (“Both officers’ use of deadly force was reasonable under the circumstances,” Ms. Lacey wrote in a 2019 memo.) The re-examinations themselves take time, and liberal prosecutors may yet file criminal charges against more officers in past cases. The police had responded to a call that Mr. Gonzalez, 26, was acting strangely in a park and talking to himself. The officer, Hector Jimenez, was cleared in each case and remains with the Oakland Police Department.

Jeriod Price had served more than half of a 35-year prison sentence for murdering another man at a nightclub in 2002. The authorities in South Carolina warned the public that he was dangerous and “could be anywhere in the world,” pleading for information that could aid their sudden, frantic search. A prominent judge, just a day before his own retirement, had signed and then sealed an order clearing the way for Mr. Price’s release from prison in March, even though he still had some 16 years remaining on his sentence. A month later, the South Carolina Supreme Court overruled the judge’s order. Mr. Price failed to surrender, setting off a manhunt with officers from law enforcement agencies combing the state and beyond.

Mimicking the 19th Century in the Age of A.I.

Five of his 11 paintings on view at Petzel incorporate A.I.-generated imagery, mostly buried in abstract spills and smears. Indeed, Price conjured the pictures using A.I., printed them “wet” on plastic, then smeared the ink with his fingers, adding an inimitable human touch. This is the distinctive garbled diction of image-generators, which imitate the look of words but not necessarily their meaning. It sure looks like a vintage photo, though: a black and white, worn-looking picture of two women, one hunching enigmatically behind the other. Human anatomy, like words, can be tricky for image-generating A.I.’s.)
